My second child starts middle school in the fall, and wants to learn an instrument. Our first child also started in sixth grade, and he played tenor sax. But the first child was far taller at the same age, so the tenor sax was not a problem for him. But second child is short for his age, taking after my side of the family where the males are lucky to hit 5'6" (except me, oddly enough.)
Second son has thrown out a bunch of ideas for instruments that would interest him, so I thought it would be good to help him rein in his options to those that would work well for his build.
For instance, one option high on his list is cello. That would probably mean mom or me lugging the thing around for him until he was big enough to carry it himself comfortably. But it is an absolutely beautiful instrument (my favorite in the string family). Not sure if hands need to be bigger, though?
Most of the instruments on his list would be band instruments, which is good because the band director at his new school is fantastic. So maybe I just reach out to him. But I thought I'd solicit advice here first.

Best beginning band/orchestra instruments for short kids?
