Other soluble tablets like paracetamol and vitamin C - taken at maximum doseage - can also heighten chance of heart problems, research shows

Soluble aspirin can increase the risk of heart attacks due to its high salt levels, experts warn.

Research showed patients taking maximum doses of the painkiller and other soluble tablets – like ~paracetamol and vitamin C – were at a 16% increased risk of a heart attack, stroke or death from a vascular condition.

Study leader Dr Jacob George, of Dundee University, said: “These drugs can be picked up in the supermarket. We have no control over how many millions buy these drugs.”

The report, in the British Medical Journal, called for soluble pills to be “clearly labelled with the sodium content in the same way as foods”.

Drug regulators will consider the ~findings, while patients with concerns were urged to see their GP.

Previous studies have shown low doses of non-soluble aspirin can cut the risk of heart attacks.
