Weidman Vs. Silva II

jeudi 31 octobre 2013

This should be a interesting rematch. Weidman is a stud but, he is not getting the credit he deserves b/c people are saying that since Silva was playing around it was a lucky punch. I am putting my money on Weidman

Bengals, Dolphins scoreless after 1st quarter (Yahoo Sports)

Caleb Sturgis missed a 34-yard field goal badly late in the opening quarter, and the Miami Dolphins were hearing boos from their home fans during a scoreless first quarter against the Cincinnati Bengals on Thursday night. Dolphins defensive end Cameron Wake gave his team the ball at the Cincinnati 25 after stripping it away from Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton late in the quarter. On fourth-and-1, Dolphins coach Joe Philbin sent in the field-goal unit, to the dismay of some in the crowd. Dolphins quarterback Ryan Tannehill was 2 for 4, collecting only 9 yards.

Sports Fitness Medicine - Young athletes at risk for lower back injuries

Lower back injuries are the third most common injuries suffered in athletes under age 18, according to a study presented by Loyola University Medical Center sports medicine physician Neeru Jayanthi, MD. Many injuries are severe enough to sideline young athletes for one-to-six months, and put them at future risk for long-term back problems...

Dedication or obsession?

Why can't I just sit down and do nothing like normal people? I have been working out around a neck (pinched nerve) injury for 7 months now. Some people tell me to take time off but I can't because working out has become an obsession. I feel guilty and crappy when I don't have my daily dose of exercise .....

What's your fitness age?

[The New York Times Magazine]

Trying to quantify your aerobic fitness is a daunting task. It usually requires access to an exercise-physiology lab. But researchers at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in Trondheim have developed a remarkably low-tech means of precisely assessing aerobic fitness and estimating your “fitness age,” or how well your body functions physically, relative to how well it should work, given your age.

The researchers evaluated almost 5,000 Norwegians between the ages of 20 and 90, using mobile labs. They took about a dozen measurements, including height, body mass index, resting heart rate, HDL and total cholesterol levels. Each person also filled out a lengthy lifestyle questionnaire. Finally, each volunteer ran to the point of exhaustion on a treadmill to pinpoint his or her peak oxygen intake (VO2 max), or how well the body delivers oxygen to its cells. VO2 max has been shown in large-scale studies to closely correlate with significantly augmented life spans, even among the elderly or overweight. In other words, VO2 max can indicate fitness age.

In order to figure out how to estimate VO2 max without a treadmill, the scientists combed through the results to determine which of the data points were most useful. You might expect that the most taxing physical tests would yield the most reliable results. Instead, the researchers found that putting just five measurements — waist circumference; resting heart rate; frequency and intensity of exercise; age; and sex — into an algorithm allowed them to predict a person’s VO2 max with noteworthy accuracy, according to their study, published in the journal Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise.

The researchers used the data set to tabulate the typical, desirable VO2 max for a healthy person at every age from 20 to 90, creating specific parameters for fitness age. The concept is simple enough, explains Ulrik Wisloff, the director of the K. G. Jebsen Center of Exercise in Medicine at the Norwegian University and the senior author of the study. “A 70-year-old man or woman who has the peak oxygen uptake of a 20-year-old has a fitness age of 20,” he says. He has seen just this combination during his research.

The researchers have used all of this data to create an online calculator that allows people to determine their VO2 max without going to a lab. You’ll need your waist measurement and your resting heart rate. To determine it, sit quietly for 10 minutes and check your pulse; count for 30 seconds, double the number and you have your resting heart rate. Plug these numbers, along with your age, sex and frequency and intensity of exercise, into the calculator, and you’ll learn your fitness age.

The results can be sobering. A 50-year-old man, for instance, who exercises moderately a few times a week, sports a 36-inch waist and a resting heart rate of 75 — not atypical values for healthy middle-aged men — will have a fitness age of 59. Thankfully, unwanted fitness years, unlike the chronological kind, can be erased, Dr. Wisloff says. Exercise more frequently or more intensely. Then replug your numbers and exult as your “age” declines. A youthful fitness age, Dr. Wisloff says, “is the single best predictor of current and future health.”

AP source: Martin out with emotional issues (Yahoo Sports)

Miami Dolphins tackle Jonathan Martin left the team this week to receive professional assistance for emotional issues, a person familiar with the situation said, and was ruled out of Thursday night's game against Cincinnati. Martin was with relatives, and his issues didn't involve any problems with the coaching staff, the person said. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the Dolphins have said not released any details of the illness. He was replaced by Tyson Clabo, who started Miami's first six games before being benched.

49ers linebacker Aldon Smith turns himself in (Yahoo Sports)

All-Pro 49ers linebacker Aldon Smith turned himself in to Santa Clara County authorities this week, then immediately posted $75,000 bail. Santa Clara County district attorney's spokesman Sean Webby confirmed Thursday that Smith had surrendered and posted bail late Tuesday, an expected move after he was charged Oct. 9 with three felony counts of illegal possession of an assault weapon, stemming from a party at his home in June 2012. 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh said on his weekly radio show with 95.7 The Game that Smith met with 49ers officials Wednesday at team headquarters. Harbaugh has traded text messages with Smith, and said on the radio ''he's made quite a bit of progress.'' If that's the case, Smith could rejoin the team as soon as Monday following the bye week and be ready to play for the 49ers (6-2) for a Nov. 10 home game against the Carolina Panthers.

7 weird ways to lower blood pressure

Seek the sun

Doesn’t a sunny day just warm your heart? Turns out, it may keep it healthy, too. In a new study, researchers at the University of Edinburgh found that people exposed to UV rays experienced a significant drop in blood pressure—even before their vitamin D production kicked in. The reason: Sunlight converts nitrate stored in your skin to nitric oxide, a compound that helps dilate your blood vessels, says study author Richard Weller, MD. Although you should still use sunscreen daily (click here to find the best kind for your skin type), Dr. Weller says this finding may illuminate the link between sunlight and the lower risk of heart disease seen in previous research.

Visit the zoo

You don’t have to adopt a puppy to enjoy the BP-lowering benefit of animals (although we’d certainly support that decision!). When people in a Japanese study visited a zoo, their systolic blood pressure (the top number) dropped 6%, and their diastolic (the bottom number) decreased by 8%. Why? Observing the animals wakes up your parasympathetic nervous system, which reduces your blood pressure to help counteract stress-induced adrenaline spikes. “We know that human warmth and contact is important in relieving stress and lowering blood pressure,” says John Elefteriades, MD, chief of cardiothoracic surgery at Yale New-Haven Hospital. “Animals can serve the same purpose.”

Lend a hand

Adults who volunteer at least 200 hours a year—roughly 4 hours per week—are 40% less likely to develop high blood pressure than non-volunteers, finds a recent Carnegie Mellon University study. The benefit is two-pronged: “Volunteer activities provide opportunities to make healthy social connections,” says study author Rodlescia Sneed, PhD. “It also can give you perspective about your problems. Yours might seem less disastrous.” By learning to cope with challenges in positive ways, you avoid the negative physiological effects of stress, says Dr. Sneed. The most beneficial volunteer activities are likely the ones you enjoy, she says.

Meditate at work

Chained to your desk all day? You can still cut stress: Workers who meditated in their office chair for just 15 minutes showed a significant decline in blood pressure, according to a recent study from Australia. “Meditation may quiet the sympathetic nervous system—the fight-or flight part,” says Dr. Elefteriades. That equals less release of epinephrine, a hormone that raises your blood pressure.

Not sure where to start? Download a guided meditation app for your smartphone, like Smiling Mind (free) or The Mindfulness App ($1.99). Hint: Squeeze in your “ohms” during your lunch hour, so you can switch off your office phone—and therefore eliminate distractions—as the study participants did.

Hug your husband

Love really is a drug. Women who frequently hug their partner tend to have lower blood pressure than those in less affectionate relationships, a study in the journal Biological Psychology reveals. The benefit may stem from the bonding hormone, oxytocin, which not only helps you feel calm, but also may dampen sympathetic nervous system activity in your heart and blood vessels, says study author Kathleen Light, PhD. “We haven’t verified the optimal hug frequency and whether hugs need to be long,” she says. But her lab has shown that practicing “sensitive warm touch”—for example, massage—with your partner three times a week for 30 minutes can lead to higher oxytocin and lower BP.

Just dance

Tune up your BP with music. A new study in the Netherlands Heart Journal found that musicians have lower blood pressure than non-musicians, possibly because playing an instrument is as physically demanding as exercise (especially if you pick percussion!).

Not your thing? Jamming to music—even if you’re not making it—may also keep your numbers from topping the charts: In a recent Japanese study, people who regularly sang along with and stretched to music saw a significant decline in their blood pressure. One theory: Music may increase dopamine release in the brain, leading to a blood pressure drop, according to Italian researchers, who found that people who listened to Mozart had lower BP than those who sat in silence. Zumba, anyone?

Get a grip

Hitting the treadmill isn’t the only exercise that does your heart a solid. Isometric handgrip exercises—squeezing a spring-loaded handgrip device for 2 minutes at a time, repeated for a total of 12 to 15 minutes—can help control your blood pressure, according the American Heart Association study review. Why it works: After you contract your muscles for a couple of minutes, your body has to restore blood flow to your hands—which may improve blood-vessel function, the researchers say. Do this routine at least three times a week in addition to your normal workouts. Try Zon hand grips

Any Chemical-Friendly Doctors in the L.A. Area?

I've always had regular blood tests and never any serious problems. Excellent health in general. Recently had a health scare after taking Nolvadex I bought online. (My doc had previously refused to write a scrip for it.) Don't really wanna talk to him about it 'cause he'll just say, "I told you so." Made me think how nice it would be to have a doc who is familiar with the chems bodybuilders use. I live in L.A., so local would be nice, but if necessary I'd travel anywhere in Southern California. Any recommendations? Thanks. Might be best to PM your answer so we don't get any good docs in trouble.

Oiling Up "Not Allowed"?

I've been enjoying reading a lot of the threads and articles. One of the FAQ articles about competing by a guy who I guess is considered and expert about contests said, "Oiling up is not required and sometimes is not allowed."

That surprised the hell out of me. Why and when would it not be allowed? Has anyone ever been in, or been to, a contest where oiling up was not allowed?

I've always liked the look of a heavy oil job; I think I'd find both the men and women unappealing in bright stage lights without oil.

I've had a facebook account for a few years now but quite not really sure why since I never used it. And when I did it was something easily done via email or text or face to face (heaven forbid we do that anymore).

Anyways, I've been talking about closing it down forever, but just never did. Don't get me wrong, I'm not judging those that use it. It's just for me, I'd rather not.

Sports Fitness Medicine - Exercise may prevent fall-related injuries in older adults

New research suggests that exercise programs aimed at preventing falls in older adults may also prevent injuries caused by falls. This is according to a study published in the BMJ. Falls among older adults are very common...

While many football helmet and mouth guard manufacturers claim that their equipment will lessen impact forces and reduce concussion risk, neither a specific brand nor a higher cost were associated with fewer concussions in adolescent athletes, according to an abstract presented at the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) National Conference and Exhibition in Orlando...

Craziness!

My good colleagues Janine Caira and Georga Benz wrote a paper way back in 1997 about one of the strangest parasites ever recorded in an animal. This paper has stuck with me ever since, I think because I saw the original photos when I visited George’s lab back when he was with Tennessee Aquarium (he’s now at Middle Tennessee State U.). So, I thought I’d revive it for you guys; the story goes like this:

Janine and her co-author Nancy Kohler had received a report from a longliner of a really big foul-hooked shortfin mako caught near Montauk, NY. Now, Janine is the queen of tapeworm taxonomy in sharks and rays - believe it or not, there’s lots of them - and had visited Montauk before to collect parasites during catch-and-kill shark tournaments held there. To make the most of the unfortunate death of this mako, they raced across the sound from Connecticut to collect parasites from the beast. It was a huge animal, nearly 900lbs, and during necropsy, as they say in the paper, they “were astonished to find two anguilliform fish in the lumen of the heart”. Thats right, eels; this shark had two eels living in the chambers of the heart! These particular eels, called pugnose eels, Simonchelys parasitica, have been recorded before burrowing into the flesh of halibut and other large North Atlantic fishes (hence their species name), but never completely internal and certainly not in the lumen of the heart, so this was a truly remarkable find.

Janine and her colleagues were unable to determine the path of entry, but they showed good evidence that the eels were alive in the heart prior to the shark being killed and put in the fridge, because their guts were full of blood and there were pathologic changes to the heart. Their conclusion? That this was a facultatively parasitic relationship. In other words, the eels didn’t need to be living in the sharks heart (that would be obligate parasitism), rather they took advantage of an opportunity to get a meal. They proposed that the eels probably attacked the shark after it had been hooked and was dangling, distressed, from the longline. They had some evidence that the shark was probably resting on the bottom, which may have made it easier for the eels to find. The pugnoses somehow gained entry (hypothesised to be through the gills) and made their way to the heart, where they dined on the beasts blood up until it died. Maybe they would have burrowed out again after the animal expired, maybe they would have suffocated (remember – the eels had be swimming in and breathing the sharks blood once they were inside, how bizarre is that?). We’ll never know because the carcass went in the fridge, which ended things for the eels, but also led to this amazing discovery.

The horrifying part is that the shark was almost certainly alive as the eels made their way into its flesh and began to consume its life blood from the inside. It would have been a long, slow and nasty way to go out. It just goes to show that even when you are at the top of the food chain, you’re never really at the top of the food chain…

Duh- thanks for that.

Yes, men really do ogle women's bodies

Sharon Jayson, USA TODAY 12:03 a.m. EDT October 29, 2013

Eye-tracking technology confirms that breasts, waists and hips get longer looks.

The eyes don't lie: Men really do look at women's bodies more than their faces, according to a new study that used eye-tracking technology to prove what many women have long observed.

But it's not just men who do it -- the study found that women look at other women's bodies, too.

"We live in a culture in which we constantly see women objectified in interactions on television and in the media. When you turn your own lens on everyday, ordinary women, we focus on those parts, too," says lead author and social psychologist Sarah Gervais of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

"Until now, we didn't have evidence people were actually doing that to women's bodies," she says. "We have women's self-reports, but this is some of the first work to document that people actually engage in this."

The participants – 29 women and 36 men – were outfitted with the eye-tracking system, which measures in milliseconds how long the eyes are fixed on certain spots. Their gazes reacted to photographs of the same 10 women, each with three different digitally manipulated body shapes – curvaceous, much less curvaceous and in-between. (Only women's bodies were viewed by study participants.) Both sexes fixed their gaze more on women's chests and waists and less on faces. Those bodies with larger breasts, narrower waists and bigger hips often prompted longer looks.

The explanation may be partly evolutionary, Gervais says, since men may be drawn to more shapely women for childbearing -- while women may be checking out their competition, she suggests.

And the study, published today in the journal Sex Roles, also finds that even when men are told to focus more on evaluating a woman's expressions and personality, women with more curves get more positive personality ratings.

Researcher Kun Guo, who also uses eye tracking in his studies at the University of Lincoln in the United Kingdom, says the technology provides "more objective measurements" than do questionnaires, which are subjective.

"The beauty of eye movements is that it is more difficult to inhibit," he says.

Jamie Lynn Goldenberg, an associate professor of psychology at the University of South Florida in Tampa, says there's been a lot of research on self-objectification, but only recently has attention turned to perceptions by others. She hasn't used eye-tracking in her studies but says it's "an interesting way" to look at objectification, which amounts to viewing women as objects.

"We have new methodologies for studying these things -- getting into the eyes of the perceiver," she says. "It doesn't explain why they're looking, but they're
