Advice for Getting Into The Actuarial Field

vendredi 3 octobre 2014

I was hoping those of you in the field could give me some advice on how to get into the actuarial field. A little bit of background on myself:

I currently have a B.A. in Health Science and Human Services, and I work in an outpatient facility at a hospital where about 75% of my job pertains to insurance. Since I started my job (3 years ago), I have found that I really like working with insurance, and started researching jobs in the field. I stumbled upon actuarial positions and was immediately interested. The only setback: my bachelor's degree (and subsequently my course experience) is not in math/finance/statistics.

About a year ago, I spoke with the head of the actuarial department at an accredited university and was told if I supplemented/boosted my current degree by taking some math and statistics courses, and if I passed one, maybe two, of the actuarial exams, getting a job in the field would be a realistic possibility. Almost immediately after I spoke with him, I went to this link upon his recommendation (http://ift.tt/1r8rugG) and enrolled in the recommended statistics and mathematics courses at a local community college. As of today, I have completed two semesters of statistics, as well as Calculus I and II. I am currently in Calculus III, and will be registering for Differential Equations next semester. However, I scour the job boards daily and see more and more employers want a bachelor's degree in mathematics/finance/statistics and I have since become very uncertain of what the head of the actuarial department has told me.

Since I have become increasingly uncertain, I am now considering going to graduate school to get my master's degree in actuarial sciences. The downside to doing that is that it is a huge financial undertaking, and I will need to work while I am in school. Employment while I am in school is crucial, as I will have to move to go to graduate school since there are not any mater's degree actuarial programs in Cleveland, OH (that I am aware of, at least). My tentative plan is, once accepted into a program, I would try to get a job as an administrative assistant in an actuarial firm/department since I have some knowledge (albeit limited) of the insurance industry, but not as it pertains to the actuarial profession. I was hoping that my getting into an actuarial graduate program would show my serious intent to be in the profession, and would make me a better qualified job prospect, as well as give me experience in the field in lieu of an internship. I see graduate school as a huge financial risk since my bachelor's degree is not in the field, and the last thing I would want to do is take on debt and not be a viable, desirable candidate for job opportunities upon graduating.

Can anyone offer suggestions on what I could/should do? I feel like I am aiming in the dark and hoping I hit the target. Any help/suggestions/recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance!
