How do you study until the point where you can take practice exams?

The most effective studying strategy by far is taking practice exams over and over under exam conditions. But you need a certain mastery of the material until it is logical to take a practice exam.

How do you guys get to that level? I'm studying FM right now, when I studied for Exam P, I did every problem in every section, and it was absolutely brutal, made me lose interest really quickly. When it was time to start taking practice tests after I had mastered some of the material, I actually enjoyed the studying (as much as one could possibly enjoy studying) and had no problem waking up in the morning and going through a couple practice tests throughout the day.

Obviously doing every single problem would be effective, but it is also the most tedious and makes me hate studying, and doesn't seem to be the most efficient method.

Anyone have thoughts?
