Test advice for newbie?

samedi 17 janvier 2015

Hello all, I am a 2nd year undergraduate student and math major, and I wanted to take my first actuary exam [P] before the end of the school year (4-5 months to study, is that reasonable?)

I'm a CC (community college) student. I'm transferring this fall to a university, and where will depend on my actual decisions in a few months. Because of this, I want to take my first exam while I'm still at CC (where the course load is much lighter/I have more free time).

After reading through many threads, the general consensus seems to be that anything past stats/calculus 2 won't help that much, (at least for the preliminary exams). With this in mind, I want to start studying now because it's been a while since I dealt with stats/probability and I likely forgot even the most basic concepts.

I guess my questions would be (and forgive me if they are basic/too broad, I'm totally new to this):

- Is taking the exam sometime in May giving me enough time to study?

- What/how should I study? (sorry I know this is a very loaded question, let me to specify). I've read that a good resource for study material is books like ACTEX, but I have to pay almost $100 for this. Is it worth it?

- If not, could you guys direct me to other good sources? (or even if ACTEX is good, free/cheaper alternative study materials?)

Any advice, even if I didn't mention anything about it, would be appreciated. Thanks!
