In a nutshell, tidy data is a standardized format which gives the practitioner a consistent data structure on which to perform statistical analysis. More technically, it's equivalent to the 3rd normal form in database theory.
It's not very long and easy to read, only 25 pages. I think it's a worthwhile read.
