The Economist Magazine came out with their rankings of best places to be born in 2013... :link:
Switzerland is #1 followed by Australia. Canada turns up at #9 and the U.S. is tied with Germany at #16.
Having lived in three of these countries and visited several of the others in the last year or so, I'd argue that they probably got it right. The U.S. had a definite 3rd world feel to it compared to several of the other countries I've been to recently. On the other hand, maybe it's just that LAX is a really crappy airport.
With my current job search, it seems like there's more opportunity and a better life to be had working in Australia, New Zealand, Canada and much of Western Europe vs. working in the U.S.. The pay elsewhere is on par, the vacation time seems quite a bit better, education systems are better, crime is lower, and overall standard of living seems better.
One place where I'd disagree with their rankings is Taiwan and Hong Kong being higher on the list than the U.S. I can definitely see there being lots of opportunity there, but I'd be worried about a surging China trying to demonstrate it's power in the region. Plus Hong Kong has really bad air quality!
Any thoughts? If you had a choice of countries to live in where would you pick other than your current country?
At this point in time, I'm thinking New Zealand...
