I hate unions

mardi 2 septembre 2014

My wife has been working at a hospital for about a year. The hospital was getting bought out, and people were nervous that layoffs were coming. Then, last week, they laid off a bunch of people. Thankfully, my wife's group was left alone.

This morning she gets called into the department head's office. She tells her that one of the laid off employees had the same job title as my wife. According to the union rules at the hospital (all employees there are forced to join the union), if you get laid off, you can steal the job of someone else with the same type of job who's been there for less time than you, and let them be laid off. They call it bumping. Well, the person decided to bump my wife out. The department head told my wife that it's no reflection on her, they loved her, she was a great worker, blah blah blah.

My wife's (ex) boss was furious. She really liked my wife, and apparently the person who's replacing her has a bad reputation (which is probably why she was selected to be laid off in the first place).

This is just another reason why I hate unions. Why should a person who's gotten lazy be protected by the union and be able to take the job of someone who's a hard worker?
