What muscles look good on women?

dimanche 31 août 2014

A comment in the "excuses" thread made me wonder if there is a general consensus on this topic, or wildly varying opinions.

It seems that a lot of women think that all guys want a skinny woman, preferably with large breasts. As a result, some women avoid weight-lifting, not wanting to look too masculine.

I'll admit, I'm not a fan of women with big biceps. Maybe that's a sign of insecurity in myself, but I definitely don't find "guns" on a woman to be attractive. A toned look (with some non-bulky muscularity) looks great.

And a six-pack seems a little over the top as well. It doesn't bother me as much as the big biceps. And if it's just starting to show, it can look quite nice. But chiseled abs on a woman aren't my thing.

Having said that, I think quads on a woman look awesome! I'm always encouraging my wife to take up barbell squats, but she says she doesn't want big quads. I keep telling her, I've never seen quads too big on a woman unless she was truly a body-builder.

Similarly, glutes are difficult for a woman to overdo. The only times I've been bothered by overly muscular glutes on a woman was when her body fat was so low that she looked crazy ripped.

I'm curious to get the thoughts of other guys on this topic. I think it might be helpful for women to hear this, particularly those afraid of weight lifting.

Announcing my retirement.

At the beginning of this month I was suspended for posting a picture of a black man standing there with a shirt on that says "I did not evolve." in the political humor thread.

Basically that thread I made about race realism convinced me that no one in this forum has anything informed to say about the science of race. So after that I had ceased in making any effort to ensure the reasonableness of my posts. I think of it as a victory lap, you're not really running to compete with anyone at that point you're just gratuitously and effortlessly circling the track. Prior to the suspension I had actually gotten PM's from 2 people expressing support of my threads. After that I just started making arguments I thought were funny.

But I've really got to focus on some rl things now so sorry to disappoint you guys but I must announce my retirement. I'm actually surprised that I haven't gotten banned, I consider some of the things I posted now to be far more offensive than what I had previously posted. My guess is that some of the mods figured I was discrediting myself and saw no need to intervene.

Which study materials?

Hello all,

I just finished the FA of the modules and I'm going back to tackle those preliminary exams (I passed P, FM, MFE, and took a break to do the modules).

Any ideas as to the busy study materials? In the past I've used ASM and ADAPT, but I know each exam is different, and different courses may excel at explaining the material for different exams.

How to find l_x?

These is probably a stupid question but I was wondering how to find l_x?

The problem says, " Calculate these probabilities using the American Experience Mortality Table and UDD"

3.5p40 and 3q45.7

I have 3.5p40= (l_43 - .5 d_43)/l_40

The American Experience table shows Age | Deaths per 1,000 | Expectation of Life(years)

How would I be able to find l_43 from that?

Also do I have to find to probability using the table and UDD? So find two probabilities for each?

Do I have to start with an initial l_0, and then make a table all the way to l_43?

or is there a shortcut in using the given info on the table? Thank you!

Mathematically perfect way to slice a bagel

Because you know you need to cut it like this.

Basically, you’re making a bagel Möbius strip, creating two interlocking carb circles to expose maximum surface area for cream-cheese slathering. Sure, it’s a little more complicated than simply slicing your bagel in half, but isn’t the promise of extra cream cheese on bagel action worth the effort?

EOM3(ex.2 task 3)- calculating DB plan's impact on budget

I'm creating a hybrid pension plan where each employee receives "the greater the pension that can be provided by the individual member‟s DC assets at retirement and the pension equal to 1.05% of pensionable earnings up to the CPP covered earnings limit and 1.50% of covered earnings in excess of the CPP covered earnings limit per year of service."

I know how to figure out which is greater, but I'm having a tough time figuring out what the yearly DB contributions are and how to put them into the budget to compare to the DC-only plan. I work in health and I don't really know too much about pensions. My only thought is it seems like I need some life annuity factors for ages 50 and 51 that I don't have to back out 2006's contribution.

Or is the accrued pension always based on a retirement age of 65? if so how do I factor in for investment gains and inflation when calculating this year's budget impact?

Good "investment" or no?

So I got a mailer from Chase Bank saying that if you open a checking account, you get $200 for free. Looking at the details I found the following:

1) Account must be open for 6 months or the $200 is deducted at closing

2) Must have regular direct deposits for a 3-month period to get the $200 (I'm putting in $1 biweekly).

3) Must have a minimum of $1500 in the account to avoid checking fees.

So I opened the account and dropped in $1500, figuring a guaranteed 13.3% return over 6 months sounds pretty cool. My friends, though, all seem to think it's a bad move. I don't anticipate needing the money, and could simply close the account and make no interest if it was needed. Are they just being financially illiterate, or am I missing something?

Basic Premium Factor in LRARO Policies

Can anyone help me understand why we remove (c-1)*E from the basic premium factor?

I'm assuming it's because the expense provision (e) already includes LAE and we're removing it here so it's not double counted when applying the LCF to actual losses over the policy term.

Actuarial Science Undergrad Program.....?

If an undergrad student graduates with a B.Sc in actuarial science coupled with mathematical electives which can include the following coursework:

1) Discrete mathematics (discrete math as an elective) and linear algebra (mandatory)

2) logic-based math (elective)

3) PDEs (elective) and ODEs (mandatory)

4) numerical analysis (elective)

5) Advanced calculus (taking calculus 4 as an elective which includes topics like Multiple integrals. Parametric equations. Cylindrical and spherical coordinates. Vector-valued functions, vector calculus: Green’s Theorem, Gauss Theorem and Stokes’ Theorem and their applications. Complex numbers.)

6) real analysis (elective)

7) abstract algebra (elective)

8) stochastic processes (mandatory)

9) mathematical modelling (mandatory)

10) applied probability (mandatory)

11) statistical inference (mandatory)

12) applied multivariate analysis (mandatory)

13) applied regression methods(mandatory)

14) analysis of time series data (mandatory)

15)advanced undergrad microeconomics and macroeconomics (mandatory)

16) portfolio management theory and investment analysis (mandatory)

17) actuarial classes ranging from contingencies, financial mathematics, derivatives' pricing, to loss models (mandatory)

18) introduction to programming and problem solving (mandatory)

19) financial accounting

20) core curriculum courses

I believe such coursework is more comprehensive than any undergrad math degree. In my university, what math students take and actuarial students don't are some science electives (they select 4 courses from different disciplines physics, chemistry, CS, and biology)

The reason why I though about taking these math electives is the fact that I am interested in becoming a quant/ QFI actuary and I am thinking about doing Ph.D in economics later on that might focus on the impact of exotic securities and quant modelling on macroeconomic growth and on the global economy (this requires taking real analysis and similar abstract classes to show the differentiability, continuity, convexity, and ....etc of any economic model)

The reason why I did not think about taking the Quant route directly because of what i felt when I read about the financial crisis and the different economic recessions that happened (even under the supervision of tycoon quants such as Merton and Scholes when they were on the board of Long Term Capital Management which went bankrupt. I am still a noob but based on my humble knowledge, I am interested in focusing on advancing the actuarial models (which some people considered them too simplistic especially the models used when dealing with client) and avoiding the idea of relaxing the quant assumptions used in their complicated algorithms which might include some points of weakness.

I am interested in pursuing my graduate education at a top tier university

The reason why I might not major in math is the fact that some math courses are offered once a year and this is my final semester to change semester (which is before becoming a senior)

I still have the option to major in math through taking some core curriculum and math courses

Currently my earned credit hours are 75.

The Actuarial science option based on the coursework I posted above: additional 70 credit hours

The Math option: additional 68 credit hours

As you could observe, my prospective coursework is highly quantitative so will the actuarial science degree harm me as a brand even if my coursework is different from the traditional ACTS programs?

Against Empathy

http://ift.tt/1qTgJTQ

Quote:

When asked what I am working on, I often say I am writing a book about empathy. People tend to smile and nod, and then I add, “I’m against it.” This usually gets an uncomfortable laugh.

This reaction surprised me at first, but I’ve come to realize that taking a position against empathy is like announcing that you hate kittens—a statement so outlandish it can only be a joke. And so I’ve learned to clarify, to explain that I am not against morality, compassion, kindness, love, being a good neighbor, doing the right thing, and making the world a better place. My claim is actually the opposite: if you want to be good and do good, empathy is a poor guide.

The word “empathy” is used in many ways, but here I am adopting its most common meaning, which corresponds to what eighteenth-century philosophers such as Adam Smith called “sympathy.” It refers to the process of experiencing the world as others do, or at least as you think they do. To empathize with someone is to put yourself in her shoes, to feel her pain. Some researchers also use the term to encompass the more coldblooded process of assessing what other people are thinking, their motivations, their plans, what they believe. This is sometimes called “cognitive,” as opposed to “emotional,” empathy. I will follow this convention here, but we should keep in mind that the two are distinct—they emerge from different brain processes; you can have a lot of one and a little of the other—and that most of the discussion of the moral implications of empathy focuses on its emotional side.

Policy reserve formulas

I'm looking at MATE notecards 164, 165, and 166.

The retrospective formula for policy reserves is a summation from 0 to t-1 of tpx*v^i-t[net premium- claim cost]. I thought the retrospective formula accumulates from time 0 to t-1 the difference of received net premiums and paid claims. Why aren't we using (1+i)^i-t*1/tpx?

Is the 2 year preliminary term prospective formula the same on a per survivor basis as policy issue basis? It seems that way btw notecards 164 and 165.

On notecard 166, why isn't the dac formula using an accumulation interest factor?

Obama has "No Plan for Dealing with ISIS"

http://ift.tt/1vW0aHg

Quote:

President Obama is facing intense criticism for admitting Thursday "we don't have a strategy yet" for dealing with Islamic State militants in Syria, despite warnings from top military advisers and others that the group must be confronted on that side of the border.

The president made the comment during a briefing with reporters in which he overtly played down the prospect of any imminent military action in Syria. He tried to temper speculation that he was about to roll out a "full scale" strategy, one that might expand the current, limited airstrike campaign in northern Iraq.

"I don't want to put the cart before the horse. We don't have a strategy yet," Obama said.

...

The president said, once a strategy is formed, there "will be a military aspect to that" and might be a role for an "international coalition" providing air support.

But he was vague on the question of what to do in Syria. Amid speculation over whether the U.S. would ever partner with Bashar Assad to fight ISIS on that side of the border, Obama reiterated his view that "Assad's lost legitimacy."

He said the U.S. would continue to support the "moderate opposition" in the country, giving people a choice other than just Assad or ISIS.

Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell, after Obama's remarks, urged the president to develop a "regional strategy" for the Islamic State and present it to Congress and the American people.

"If the President is prepared to engage Congress with a strategic plan to protect the U.S. and our allies from ISIL, I believe he will have significant congressional support," he said. "But don't forget, the threat from ISIL is real and it's growing -- and it is time for President Obama to exercise some leadership in launching a response."

This at the same time that the PM of London raised the terror level for that country to severe ftr

Solution

SLH should choose the AA method because

1. Of the difficulty of finding similar comparable transactions (how do we know this from the information provided?)

2. Either method requires adjustments and cannot be used directly (I would have thought AA requires more adjustments)

Retrospective Trends in general, a newb question.

So, in general, this is a kind of newb question, but i'm not totally certain about how to handle this situation.

In a prospectice pricing exercise, is there any reason not to use what the actual experience has been when selecting premium trend? So, for a simple example, say you have recently launched a product in your state, and only have, say, four quarters of experience. If your average written premium in the first quarter of launch was say $30 for medpay, but your average written premium now, say, in the 5th quarter since the launch is $33 why would you not simply say, for the first quarter the premium trend selection should be 10% because 33/30-1 = 10% ?

Same question applies to losses too. If your average pure premium was say $20 in the first quarter, and the average pure premium for claims now is $22? Would you not use 10%.

I know this is newb, but why would you not want to accurately bring to current when selecting trend. it seems the real key of the exercise is selecting what types of premium and frequency/severity loss trends you might actually see in the future. So when would you disregard your own experience? Perhaps for losses you would thing your experience is not representative of the future, so you might use an industry or other state experience to bring past claims to current, but your premium trend, it was what it was right?

Thanks!

Gareth Keenan

Cash Values

vendredi 29 août 2014

Was wondering how these things are calculated.

As far as I can tell, they're based on a mortality table, interest rates, and how many premium payments there are.

For example, let's take the 1941 CSO Basic Table, ANB on mort.soa.org (because it's the first one), and assume we have a whole life product to age 100. How would I calculate the cash values for a policy issued to a person of age 50?

I made a table and came up with the same answer in the book, which is 19/27 + 8/27e^t. However, I would also like to do it without the table. I am trying to carry out the triple sum like this:

[sum(all x1) sum(all x2) sum(all x3)] p(x)e^(tX1X2X3)

=[sum(all x1) sum(all x2)](1/3 + 2/3 e^(tX1X2))

Loss Trend Period for New Book of Business

I was wondering if the loss "trend from" date for a brand new book of business would be different from the standard midpoint of the period for an existing book of business. For an existing book, policies that are written prior to the start of the period are still exposed to loss during the period for which premium is being trended. This shifts the average accident date back 1/2 policy term to the midpoint of the period. So for a brand new book of business with no policies written before the start of the period being trended, the average accident date would be the midpoint + 1/2 policy term. Does this seem correct?

Advice Needed: 3 years experience and unemployed

Situation:

I have recently become unemployed. I have 3 years of actuarial experience. I am a couple exams away from ACAS. I don't have programming experience, though I have a lot of excel and access experience. I went to a good college and got a good GPA. I've had many interviews and I've received compliments from interviewers regarding my communication skills. I have done many phone interviews and have done several in-person interviews, but I have received no job offers. I think the main problem is that I did not develop and amass enough knowledge during my 3 years of working, so my knowledge level is not as good relative to other candidates with 3 years of experience. This happened because I was not as fully developed a person as I am now, it was my first job, and there was an awkward work structure. I feel that I am now a strong candidate, just not strong with respect to my knowledge level. If I were to begin again as an entry level, I'd do great.

Is it possible that my actuarial career is doomed because I don't have the knowledge necessary for positions requiring my experience level or greater, and yet I have too many years of experience to be considered for positions in the entry-level realm? Thoughts like, "I'm screwed" are starting to swirl in my head, which makes me depressed.

Thoughts are appreciated!!

Thank you.

Ok so the C exam has alot of material. I know that u can never be certain. But time is limited. We have six weeks left. Which topics are most important and which are the least important? Can someone list in order of most to least?

Most Important Topics

Immortality

Why hasn't the human race banded together yet to figure out how to live forever (or essentially forever)?

It seems unlikely to me that it's completely impossible to live forever, whether by figuring out how cells die and reinvigorating them or downloading our neural pattern to a computer of some sort and living in virtual or robotic bodies.

All the mundane crap in the world can take a little break imo, until we discover immortality, then we can get back to our lives knowing we have all the time in the world to do whatever we want.

It's frustrating!

California new "yes means yes" definition of consent

Usually I'm not on the bro side of this issue, but California's new law may go a bit too far. It seems to define any sex with someone who is drunk as non-consenual, that, is IMO a step too far.

Silence or lack of resistance does not constitute consent. The legislation says it's also not consent if the person is drunk, drugged, unconscious or asleep.

DOJ To Give Money From Bank Of America Settlement To Liberal Activist Groups

Not super surprised here, but another case of the current leaders helping their side. I'm sure this will be another story/scandal that just gets brushed under the rug.

http://ift.tt/1zQsb3s

Spoiler:

Judicial Watch reports that the Department of Justice is giving liberal activist groups money from a $16.6 billion settlement with Bank of America.

The groups benefitting from the lawsuit, according to Investor’s Business Daily, are the National Council of La Raza, Operation Hope, National Community Reinvestment Coalition, and Neighborhood Assistance Corporation of America. The money also went to “delinquent borrowers” in Chicago, Oakland, Detroit, Philadelphia, and other major “Democrat strongholds.”

“This is a wealth redistribution scheme disguised as a lawsuit,” Tom Fitton, president of Judicial Watch, told The Daily Caller. “And who benefits from the distribution? Interest groups the administration relies on, outside interest groups, allies and politicians in communities trying to benefit as well.”

Fitton noted that these liberal groups are basically what’s left of the Association of Community Organization for Reform Now (ACORN) network, and that President Barack Obama has ties to ACORN.

“You have La Raza that’s getting money, their former head is at the White House in a top position whose funding from the Census has gone up immensely under the Obama administration,” Fitton said.

La Raza, Operation Hope, National Community Reinvestment Coalition, and Neighborhood Assistance Corporation of America have all intimidated banks to give loans to minorities, even if they can’t afford to pay them back.

This is part of an ongoing scheme in which the DOJ puts the money it has gotten from bank settlementsin a slush fund and then funneled the money to liberal groups. Judicial Watch points out that liberal groups — many of which are the same ones benefiting from this lawsuit — also received money from multi-billion settlements from JP Morgan Chase and Citibank, as well as a $335 million settlement from Countrywide Financial Corporation.

“What we need is an honest Justice Department run by people who make a commitment to the rule of law rather using their power to extort and benefit more government and their political allies.” Fitton said. “This is no better than Tammany Hall.”

Taking MFE before FM?

Hello all,

To get straight to the point, I was planning to take the MFE sitting in November and FM in December rather than Oct/Nov. I wanted to hear people's feedbacks on how much FM material is needed as a prereq to MFE. Before majority of you jump the gun and plan on telling me I should take FM first and how much MFE is harder, please hear me out.

Some background on me:

I have pretty extensive knowledge on derivatives. I know quite a lot about options, futures, swaps, etc, having been really into finance and traded in markets. I can do the math quite easily. What I DON'T know/feel quite confident about is interest theory; this is referring to topics such as annuities, amortizations, interest theory, etc (essentially the 1st half of FM material).

I also took a class in stochastic calculus. I can't say I'm a complete expert, but I do know how to deal with Ito's Lemma, can tell you properties of Brownian Motion, Black-Scholes, etc. I'm going to assume the exam itself will of course, not be completely identical to what I've learned in class, but probably have additional material I will need to brush up on.

In short, I felt that I have a very sound foundation for MFE more than FM. The reason I'd rather delay FM is for scheduling purposes (balancing schoolwork, other personal life plans, etc) and because of the impression that FM has a lot of content that I am not too familiar with, in the sense that there's a lot of mind-numbing calculations that are all plug and chug. If this thought matters at all, I much preferred the problem-solving nature of Exam P than the memorizing large volume of material of Exam FM.

Apologize for the long post. Would appreciate any thoughts and feedback. Please let me know if I made any wrong assumptions.

Taking MFE before FM?

1/3 of Americans on Welfare

http://ift.tt/1zQs9IX

Quote:

Fifty years after the “war on poverty” was first waged, there are signs a new offensive is needed.

Newly released Census data reveals nearly 110 million Americans – more than one-third of the country – are receiving government assistance of some kind.

The number counts people receiving what are known as “means-tested” federal benefits, or subsidies based on income. This includes welfare programs ranging from food stamps to subsidized housing to the program most commonly referred to as “welfare,” Temporary Assistance for Needy Families.

At the end of 2012, according to the stats, 51.5 million were on food stamps, while 83 million were collecting Medicaid – with some benefitting from multiple programs.

Though the programs were created to help those in need, some analysts worry that the way they’re designed is, increasingly, incentivizing people not to work. They note that when recipients combine several government assistance programs, in many cases they pay better than going to work.

The Cato Institute’s Michael Tanner said that in the eight most generous states, the benefits can be tantamount to a $20 minimum wage – which would exceed the $7.25 minimum wage in most states.

“So in many cases people could actually do better on welfare than they could in an entry level job," Tanner said.

Supporters say the safety net is necessary to keep Americans from living in dire conditions. As for concerns that these benefits pay better than working, they argue the solution is to raise the minimum wage to $10.10 an hour.

"I think a lot of people would do the jobs when they pay a living wage,” said Melissa Boteach, from the Center for American Progress. “In addition, there's growing jobs in health care and information technology and energy. There's a lot of places where, if able to make investments, we can really grow our economy in those sectors.”

As millions still rely on government assistance programs, technology and automation have eliminated jobs many Americans used to do with a high school diploma. The challenge for policymakers is helping the economy adjust.

"We have to figure out a way around this. Put innovation in play and really figure out how we're going to create a new economy where we can both raise wages and create more jobs for people," Boteach said.

Tanner said there must be a serious effort to put people back to work because the continued growth of these entitlement programs is unsustainable. The number of people on such benefits is up slightly from 2011.

The government still runs a half-trillion dollar deficit, according to the most recent estimates, and the national debt is nearing $18 trillion.

"You can't in the long run have a society in which you have to rely on a smaller and smaller group of wealth producers who have to support more and more people who are not contributing to that wealth," Tanner said.

B-b-but the economy is getting better! Obama isn't a welfare president!

X and Y are independent and have common MGF e^(t^2/2). Determine the joint mgf of X+Y and X-Y. I arrived at the correct answer using the book's method, but I did the problem another way and the answers do not match. I think it is a matter of the negative Y. The t2's cancel this way and I know they should not.

E(e^(t1X)*e^(t1Y)*e^(t2X)*e^(-t2)Y) =

The waves near my house were HUGE this week.

So a ton of people are out checking it out.

I went out this morning and in addition to the surfers and spectators, there were 3 drones flying overhead. This was a 730am. My roommate said there were many more flying overhead the previous afternoon.

THis is the first time I've encountered multiple drones.

Very neat - and seems easy to operate.

Think there will have to be regulations about these?

FOr instance - the airspace at pro sporting events would be off limits - right?

EL resume help wanted

Hey guys, would much appreciate a quick look over my resume. Looking for an entry level position.

Two concerns that I have that I'd also appreciate input on whether or not to include.

1) Dates on passed exams - I have 3 done, but they were from 08-12 and none since, as I was told by a few people in the know that passing more without any relevant actuarial experience was too much. I worry that the gap from '12 to now would be concerning to some if I included these dates.

2) GPA - was only 2.9 so I choose to exclude it. Was approximately 3 in both my majors as well.

I leave both of these out with the hope that the resume without them is appealing enough to get an interview. My fear is that those who read it and were on the fence would then toss it at the inclusion of either of the above two things.

Thanks for any advice you have!

AO Dream (Featuring aofan!)

Someone (Inconceivable I think) once said something about dreading the day when AO users dream about the AO.

Well that day has come for me, which is weird because I've never been to an outing and I maintain only a white-noiseish presence on the forums.

Even weirder is the fact that the dream was about aofan, who I have little interaction with. I have never seen aofan before, but in my dream, she was a pretty young white woman. Not sure if this is accurate. Anyway, it went something like this.

I asked aofan out to lunch and she accepted. I asked her repeatedly where she would like to eat or what she was in the mood for and she either responded that she wasn't actually hungry or that she didn't care and that I could pick the place. We got into my car and started driving around my city looking for a place to eat.

Whenever I suggested a restaurant though, she would shoot it down. She seemed to be in a very bad mood and so I asked her if she wanted me to just take her back to her office but she insisted that she wanted to go out to eat with me.

Finally, we came across a Subway. I had to explain to her what a Subway was. She said she now wanted to eat something salty and I told her that Subway's meat was probably pretty salty and so she agreed. Subway it was.

The Subway turned out to be a really fancy Subway where a host seats you and a waiter comes and takes your sub order. aofan found it comical that my description of a line-up ordering system where you instruct the sandwich artisan on what you would like was incorrect.

We started making idle chit-chat, but eventually things got more serious. She asked me how I would feel about attending a wedding where the groom's name was Braun. I asked for clarification.

"Like Bron as in LeBron James?"

"No, Braun like the company that makes electric razors."

I asked her if she was engaged to be married to a man named Braun and she confirmed that this was indeed the case.

The dream ended around this point with aofan in a decidedly better mood.

That's all.

Recently accepted new position, but...

So I recently accepted a full-time position with a company I interned with over the summer, however, I have an interview tomorrow with a company that is much more desirable (better location, bigger, better support, rotational program) and I know I would jump if they say jump. Does it look bad to the prospective employer if I just started a new job and I'm looking leave so quickly? Would it burn a bridge with the company I just started full-time at? (I applied to the job I'm interviewing for while I was an intern at my present company with no promise of full-time employment). If it looks bad, is there a way I could spin it into a good thing?

Thanks in advance

I'm sure many men have dreamed of an island completely populated by exotic women. Of course, fantasy is fantasy, but what if it were reality? In a certain regard, it is — in Noiva do Cordeiro, Brazil.

It's a scenic rural town in the hills outside of Belo Horizante with one big quirk, or perk, depending on whom you talk to. This Brazilian town is inhabited and governed almost entirely by women, its population consisting of more than 600 mostly single women aged 20 to 25. Sons are sent away at 18, and spouses are banned from the town except on weekends.

Resident Nelma Fernandes, 23, said, "The only men we single girls meet are either married or related to us…. We all dream of falling in love and getting married. But we like living here and don't want to have to leave the town to find a husband." If Web traffic is any indication of interested possible suitors, it appears that the town's plea worked: Its website went down because of all the visitors to the site. So, fellas looking for an opportunity like this, pack your bags — Brazilian girls are calling.

Thought this was interesting until they mentioned the methodology was by twitter references...

Is it possible to tell someone's political persuasion simply by the food they eat?

Businessweek thinks so. Looking at two of the hottest trending foods: bacon and kale, editors concluded that those who eat the green leafy superfood tend to holding liberal beliefs while those love bacon are more conservative.

Analyzing Twitter mentions of kale and bacon by state, they were able to create a map that mirrors the red-blue state breakdown:

It turns out the nation is pretty much comprised of meat loving Republicans and veggie loving Democrats. Note that in 2012, 17 of the 23 most kale-loving states voted for President Obama. Eleven of the top bacon-loving states voted for Mitt Romney.

Those who love both bacon and kale were similarly split Obama/Romney in 2012—including Nevada, Ohio and Florida.

It may not come as a surprise that the most bacon loving states also have some of the highest obesity rates in the country.

Fortunately, there are many recipes that combine both of delicious foods. Maybe Congress should get together in the kitchen.

Retirement Accounts and Taxation

Where should i put this thread?

For those of us contributing $17.5k a year, our 401(k)s may be significant. If we have a 20-40 year investment horizon and an aggressive risk appetite, we fully expect a disproportionate amount of investment earnings.

How that proportion is taxed is very important--here's an oversimplification:

A. If that proportion is in a Roth IRA than it will not be taxed.

B. If that proportion is in a Traditional 401(k) than it will be taxed at the marginal income rate at which you pull it out. And the remainder will be taxed as a lump sum inheritance upon your death. Depending on how perfectly you are able to anticipate your own death, this could be minimized, but will never be less than 20% tax rate or so.

The obvious conclusion is that A is better than B; but how much better? And, how do we get to A?

There's the obvious $5500 annual contribution, but that doesn't end up being significant and doesn't solve the problem here, forgetting many of us are above the IRS max.

You can roll money from employer sponsored plans, but it will be taxed at your income rate and usually you have to leave the company to roll it all over.

Has anyone considered taking a year off to be a bartender on a Norwegian cruise ship or a missionary in Jamaica? By my calculation, it may be worth it.

AIG Bailout

Interesting case against the Feds, which seems to have merit.

Spoiler:

Feds Lose Bid to Throw Out Starr International Co.'s Lawsuit Over AIG Bailout

WASHINGTON - Starr International Co. Inc. scored a procedural victory in its $25 billion class-action lawsuit against the federal government over the bailout given to American International Group Inc. during the financial crisis of 2008.

A federal judge in Washington rejected the federal government's effort to get the lawsuit thrown out before it goes to trial next month.

In a brief Aug. 25 order, Judge Thomas Wheeler of the U.S. Court of Federal Claims denied the federal government's request for summary judgment, saying there were too many disputed facts for the case to be decided without a trial.

"The sheer volume of material presented is a testament to the complexity of the issues before the court," Wheeler said. "This is not a case where the parties have stipulated to an agreed set of facts and presented purely questions of law. The complexity of the submissions and the factual disagreements strongly point to the need for a trial."

Starr filed the lawsuit on behalf of its shareholders in 2011, challenging AIG's economic bailout and the government takeover of the company. At the time, Starr was one of AIG's largest shareholders.

As part of the bailout, AIG was offered the $85 billion with a 14.5% annual interest rate as long as the federal government took control of AIG as controlling lender and shareholder.

As a result of the takeover, Starr lost their stock in AIG.

The lawsuit alleges the takeover constituted an illegal taking without just compensation that violated the Fifth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.

Starr also alleges the federal government imposed a "reverse stock split" on AIG's shareholders, which had the effect of diluting stock ownership and gave the government 80% control of the voting stock.

Lawyers for the federal government have argued AIG agreed to the terms of the bailout. The government also alleges the company proposed the reverse stock split and the company's shareholders agreed to the deal.

A six-week trial is scheduled to begin on Sept. 29.

Efforts to reach a spokesman for Starr were not immediately successful.

Earlier this year, the U.S. Supreme Court denied Starr's request to have the justices weigh in on a separate lawsuit filed against the Federal Reserve Board (Best's News Service, June 30, 2014).

The justices denied Starr's petition for a hearing in a brief note posted on the court's website June 30. The justices did not give a reason for why the petition was denied. The decision not to hear the case leaves in place a ruling by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit that dismissed Starr's claims against the New York Federal Reserve.

Starr sued the Fed to reimburse AIG shareholders billions of dollars they allegedly lost as a result of the bailout. Starr argued the Federal Reserve forced AIG to enter into bailout terms that allowed AIG to gain a line of credit from the federal government.

The Second Circuit rejected that claim, upholding a lower court's decision to dismiss the case. By denying Starr's petition for a hearing, the Supreme Court upheld the Second Circuit's decision.

On the afternoon of Aug. 27, shares of American International Group Inc. were trading at $56.13, up 0.09% from the previous day's closing price.

AIG subsidiaries that are rated by A.M. Best Co. currently have a Best's Financial Strength Rating of A (Excellent).

Non-Prorated 1st Year Bonus

Bonuses are most often paid Late December to Late April, for the prior year.

You are in the final stages of negotiation at a new place, but you've missed out on how many months of work at your prior company. Most companies will "prorate" your bonus, and you can bet your prior company won't pay you for the portion of months you've worked there.

So, naturally, you throw in non-prorated first year bonus as a requirement. It means something if you start half way through the year and make a real bonus. If they say no, it's against company policy, say "...if you make it a part of sign-on bonus, I'll say yes--you have to remember I'm missing out on first year pension..."

I've never had any problem with it. Anyone?

1,400 UK girls fall victim to Muslim rape gangs cops crippled by fear of being racist

http://ift.tt/1qEKoQi

Quote:

LONDON — A report released on Tuesday on accusations of widespread sexual abuse in the northern England city of Rotherham found that about 1,400 minors — some as young as 11 years old — were beaten, raped and trafficked from 1997 to 2013 as the local authorities ignored a series of red flags.

Some children were doused in gasoline and threatened with being set on fire if they reported their abusers, the report said, and others were forced to watch rapes and threatened with the same fate. In more than a third of the cases, the victims appear to have been known to child protection agencies, but the police and local government officials failed to act.

Within hours of the report’s publication, the leader of the local government council resigned.

“Having considered the report, I believe it is only right that I, as leader, take responsibility on behalf of the council for the historic failings that are described so clearly in the report, and it is my intention to do so,” said Roger Stone, the leader of the Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council since 2003.

The vast majority of perpetrators have been identified as South Asian and most victims were young white girls, adding to the complexity of the case. Some officials appeared to believe that social workers pointing to a pattern of sexual exploitation were exaggerating, while others reportedly worried about being accused of racism if they spoke out. The report accused officials of ignoring “a politically inconvenient truth” in turning a blind eye to men of Pakistani heritage grooming vulnerable white girls for sex.

It was not until 2010 that the first case of child sexual exploitation in Rotherham, a South Yorkshire city of about 250,000 people, made it to court. Five men received long prison sentences for grooming three teenage girls for sex. It was one of several high-profile prosecutions over the past four years that revealed sexual exploitation in cities including Oxford, Rochdale and Derby.

The Times of London later published a series of articles claiming that the local authorities had been aware of several instances of sexual abuse that were not prosecuted. The Rotherham Council eventually commissioned an independent inquiry that led to Tuesday’s report.

Alexis Jay, the author of the report and a former chief inspector of social work, said that vulnerable girls as young as 11 and largely from disadvantaged backgrounds had been brutalized by groups of men.

“They were raped by multiple perpetrators, trafficked to other towns and cities in the north of England, abducted, beaten and intimidated,” she wrote.

The report described the failures of the political and police leadership as blatant. Even as social workers reported that the sexual exploitation of children was becoming a serious problem in Rotherham, senior managers in the local authority and South Yorkshire police ignored them. When victims came forward, Ms. Jay said, the police often regarded them “with contempt.”

Three earlier reports, published from 2002 to 2006, detailed the abuse, and according to Ms. Jay, “could not have been clearer in the description of the situation in Rotherham.” But the first one was “effectively suppressed” and the other two “ignored,” she said.

Some officials were apparently ordered by their managers to withhold information on the ethnic origin of the abusers, the report said. As a result, no contact was made with local Pakistani leaders for help in identifying gangs that continued to assault and abduct teenagers.

1,400 is a conservative estimate.

These girls need to check their white privilege, the UK is obviously still way too racist. Where are the feminists who are so concerned about rape? My god, your own daughters are being trafficked and gang raped and you're more concerned that someone might think you're racist.

It's official, the UK is a now a completely suicidal basket case of a country. I think many of these investigators and social workers belong in jail.

How much to spend on a bench?

mercredi 27 août 2014

I plan to buy an adjustable incline bench, mainly for dumbbell work. I might eventually buy a rack, but that would be years down the road.

From what I'm reading, it's important to get one that is not wobbly. But I'd like one that I can also fold up when not in use. So far, the one I've seen IRL that best fits these criteria is the Body Solid GFID225, which I can pick up for $249 locally.

There are more expensive benches, but they tend to be a lot heavier and more difficult to store.

Thoughts?

I am a summer actuarial intern with a consulting firm. I will very likely be returning to this firm full time after graduation, and working part time through my final quarter. I am traveling to a client meeting ~30 miles away from my home, and was told to get a cab or Uber and expense it.

I am a little out of the main city area, so I am worried about Uber showing up on time. I have also had an experience with the local cab company where they showed up 45 minutes late (not acceptable for this meeting). I remembered that I have used a town car service in the past.

I looked up pricing and found:

Cab - $60 minimum w/ gratuity, worse in traffic (likely)

Town Car - $60 flat fee w/ gratuity included

So, a town car is likely less expensive for the company. I doubt they care much, but my concern is that seeing a "town car" expensed by an intern might be frowned upon.

What would you recommend?

MGF

Is there a way to get the second moment of a geometric distribution just with the formula E(e^tX)? The book I am using only shows how to do it starting with E(X(X-1)) and then adding E(X) back onto it.

Father kills drunk driver who killed his sons, is acquitted

UPDATE, Aug. 27: A jury has acquitted a Texas father who was accused of fatally shooting the drunken driver who killed his two sons. Read more here.

A father is on trial for the alleged murder of a drunken driver who killed his two sons.

Authorities say that 32-year-old David Barajas was pushing his broken-down truck on the side of a Texas road with his 11- and 12-year-old sons when drunken driver Jose Banda struck and killed them both. Barajas is accused of shooting and killing Banda minutes after the crash.

Authorities say they found a holster and bullets in Barajas’ home, but no gun.

If convicted, he could face life in prison.

Criminal defense attorney Diana Aizman told Shepard Smith that whoever the jury panel is made up of will determine the outcome in this case.

What happens if you don't show up for the exam?

If you registered and don't show up, would it be marked as failed?

I am facing a dilemma here.

I am studying for FM in October, and also if possible, take MFE in November.

I know that is a short amount of time between tests.

So my options are to study for FM now up until October 2, which is the deadline to register for MFE. By that time I would make the decision whether or not to register for MFE based on how far I got with my studies for FM.

But if I register for MFE just before the deadline I am afraid I might not be able to register a good time for the test with prometrics.

So I want to register for MFE now. But if I do that and turns out later that I do not have adequate time to prepare for MFE I would have to either take it and have a fail probability of failing or not take it at all.

So what would happen if I don't show upnfor the test?

Also, how crowded are these tests. Is getting a seat on a good date and time ever an issue?

Ebola Confirmed for Out of Control

On Monday, Dr. Tom Frieden, director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, arrived in Liberia to assess the Ebola outbreak. The situation "is overwhelming," he said.

The outbreak "really is a crisis and is affecting most if not all the counties in Liberia already," he told NPR from Monrovia, the capital city and first stop on a three-country visit. "This is absolutely unprecedented."

The CDC, Frieden said, "is working flat out on this, but this is huge and needs a global response. ... They need a lot of help from the world."

He emphasized that the toll is "far larger than has been recorded, not because they are trying to hide anything but because they are really overwhelmed by these numbers." Beyond this, he said, the cases "are increasing at an extremely quick rate, and this is very alarming."

As bad as the Ebola situation is, Frieden warned that the worst is yet to come. "Unfortunately, we are definitely not at the peak. It's going to get worse before it gets better," he said. "The real question is how much worse will it get? How many more people will be infected and how much more risk to the world will there be?"

Anyone recognize this curve?

Landlord Issues - IANAL Third Edition

I'm looking for some advice - legal and otherwise - about how to handle this situation. Below are the facts of the case.

My roommate and I signed a 1 year lease sometime in 2012 and the lease officially ended around August 2013. We are currently living in the same place and have been on a month-to-month lease since that 1 year lease officially ended. However, the following sequence of events recently occurred:

1) My roommate found a bed bug on the floor of the apartment

2) Roommate hired a pest control firm to inspect the apartment (using a dog)

3) Dog indicated that there were bed bugs in one of the rooms - and the handler found a live bug in the same room

4) Roommate sends very long email to landlord detailing the problem (including responsibility of the landlord and tenant to address the problem)

5) Landlord sends lease termination email in response - giving us 30 days notice to move out

It is possible that my roommate overreacted to the initial sighting by sending the long winded email citing state regulations (like "warrant of habitability").

However, the retaliatory lease termination for reporting a problem is blatantly illegal in most cases.

I guess I am looking for advice about handling the situation. I haven't responded to the email that gave us 30 days notice to leave yet. I like the apartment and would prefer to not have to move but I'm not sure there are many good options at this point.

I actually set up a meeting with a lawyer to talk about this issue, but some people think I should try to reach out to the landlords first. The complicating factor is that they are out of the country (and have been for months) so I can't get into contact with them except via email.

Why is the Canada EL Market More Competitive that US?

In US, the rule of thumb for EL is 2-3 exams to be hired. But from anecdotal evidence on this forum, Canada seems to be much more competitive. Some posters even suggest that you should be at or near ASA to be considered for EL.

Is this really true? And why come?

Getting Charged for a "Free" Preventive Visit

I got my physical this year - I explicitly told the person at the doctor's office that I just wanted a preventive visit.

Two days ago I get a bill for $120 from the lab for processing the blood tests. What the hell is this shit?

Scumbag doctors, amirite?

So who do I complain to first? The insurance company? The doctor's office? Refuse to pay the lab bill? Inquiring minds want to know...

trigger warning: singletism, ableism, fat shaming, transfat shaming, cutting, doctors, hospital, mental hospital

Jenn here. Sorry I haven’t been posting. I recently suffered a terrible injustice at the hands of a bunch of singletist, ableist bigots. It all started when I was having dinner at my parents house. My mother inevitably made several cruel remarks about my weight, my veganism, and the amount of food I was eating. She started talking talking about the possibility of decreasing my food allowance even more or cutting it all together and buying all my groceries herself. Eventually, she told me I needed to see a different therapist as well as a nutritionist because apparently purposefully gaining weight is insane. According to her transfatness isn’t real and I am just addicted to food.

I was furious but I tried to stay calm for the sake of my headmates as well as for the sake of my food allowance. Derek was present and listening the entire time. Derek hates the body and resents being trapped in it. He is also very prone to harming it. At some point I lost control. Derek took over and swore at my mom then ran to the bathroom. Algoral, Carlotta, Momo, Toshi, and I were present the entire time. Derek found a razor and started cutting. He hadn’t bothered to lock the door. My mom found him and wrestled the razor out of our hand while my dad dialed 911.

I ended up fronting at the hospital. A lot of what happened is a blur. I tried to explain that I wasn’t self harming and that I am part of a multiple system. The doctor had no idea what I was talking about and asked my parents if I had been evaluated for schizophrenia. My parents basically told the doctor that I fake DID for attention.

The doctor forced me to be put on a 72 hour hold. The mental hospital was a separate hospital so I had to be taken there in an ambulance. I honestly don’t want to recall too much about it. Let’s just say that the medical and mental health system in this country is deeply, deeply ableist as well as singletist. I had to lie about my multiplicity, a large part of my identity, just to get out of there. I had to tell my headmates to lay low. They were not allowed to front for 72 hours. If any of them did, we all would have been forced to stay in that prison where we weren’t allowed to be ourselves and where some of us weren’t even allowed to merely exist. Not only that, but they had me on a reduced calorie diet while I was there… (scoff) no surprise, really.

We were released some days ago. The others have been fronting a lot to make up for lost time. My parents are angry at me and insisting that the whole ordeal was just me being attention seeking and taking it too far. They keep telling me that I don’t have DID and when I tell them that I in fact do not— that I have what is called natural multiplicity— they tell I’m making up illnesses. Natural multiplicity is real and it is not an illness or a disability! I wish they would allow me to educate them about these things since I actually know a lot about them seeing as I experience them ONLY EVERY DAY OF MY LIFE. Yeah, obviously I’ve been fighting with my parents a lot more than usual, but they haven’t decreased or cut any of my allowances so I guess I can still handle all this arguing for now.

Again, I’m sorry for my absence but I’ve been a bad place, both literally and figuratively, and I have a lot to think about. I should be posting more regularly now. Thank you all for bearing with me.

This is awesome, is this satire or for real? Credit for bringing this to public attention goes to theinternetaristocrat on youtube his video about ableism:
