I noticed that the wording for this is a little different this year. Line 15 says: Qualified medical expenses paid using HSA distributions (see instructions)
The instructions say to only include on line 15 distributions from your HSA that were used to pay you for qualified medical expense.
In the past the form, said "Unreimbursed qualified medical expenses (see instructions)" and the instructions from Tax Act, as best as I can remember, simply said to use that line for unreimbursed medical expenses, regardless of HSA distributions. This seemed to make sense so you and the IRS would have a formal record of your deposits, withdrawals, and eligible expenses.
Let's say I withdrew $1000 and had $5000 in eligible expenses. In the past I would have put $5000 on that line but this year it looks like I should put $1000 on that line.
I can see how line 15 could be interpreted to mean the $5000 but the instructions don't seem like they can be because they specify distributions.
