Why a cult?
Because Islam's holy texts state that those who leave Islam should be killed, and polls show significant majorities of followers accept this.
This is worse than scientology.
Why a death cult?
Because Islam's holy texts emphasise the rewards in the afterlife for those who follow Allah and the example of Mohammed, Islam's perfect role model for all time, and encourage its followers to place little or no value on this life in comparison.
This seems to be why so many Muslims around the world have been willing to blow themselves up in crowded markets, killing innocents including other Muslims and women and children: they are only depriving those innocents of what is regarded as this inferior, earthly life, and they believe that their god, Allah, will reward the innocents (if they are Muslim) with a far more valuable "next life" in paradise. The Quran also encourages them to believe that the non Muslims who are killed are worthless ("the lowest of creatures") who are destined for horrible tortures in hell for eternity.
Thank goodness the majority of Muslims don't behave like those who believe those parts of the Quran literally. But when they don't behave like that, it is in spite of the Quran and Mohammed's example, hence in spite of Islam. In which case, why bother self identifying as Muslim? The answer seems to be related to the death cult aspect again (apostates face at a minimum ostracism from their families, and in several cases being killed), plus being brainwashed into the religion from birth, with rote learning of the Quran being put forward as the most important part of education.
