Browsing through the list of threads, it is clear that a lot of you do CrossFit and swear by it. I'm interested in the program but had a few questions that I'm sure you guys could answer. I'll provide some background.
I've always been in pretty decent shape, having played sports growing up and wrestling through high school. In college I started weightlifting, coming out of the /fit/ school of SQUATZ & OATZ/Rippletits. During this period I also developed a disdain for the burgeoning CrossFit, as /fit/ had a pretty low opinion of it (KIPPING PULLUPS? GHEY). This was back around 2008-2009 when CF wasn't as big as it currently is and there were concerns about the qualifications of coaches- people were getting hurt.
I always sort of planned to do Starting Strength until my lifts progressed to a certain point, and then maybe do Texas Method or something along those lines. I wanted to be strong. I never really had the will for it though. Several times I would progress to a certain point and just couldn't eat the amount of calories I needed to progress. Then I'd give up for a while or play sports and get away from lifting, eventually going back. I never really got past these numbers (working sets, never did 1RMs), at a 180 BW:
Squat: 275
Bench: 215
DL: 315
Press: 140
So yeah... nothing to be that proud of but not too shabby either. Fast forward six years and my workouts have pretty much stagnated. I basically still do SS except I only get to the gym a few times a month now and I'm not getting anywhere. I wanted to Squat 300 once, now I just don't have the will and I'm effing bored with just doing the same five lifts. On top of that, I definitely can't eat the amount I would need to progress- I was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis last year and would be harming myself by eating >3000 kCal a day.
So I need something different. All I really want is consistent and challenging workouts that keep me in shape, but have a bit of variety thrown in. CrossFit seems interesting and I'd be willing to give it a try. Help me out here:
1) Powerlifting for speed- this really gives me pause. I always thought good form was IMPERATIVE for the big compound lifts... how can you maintain good form when you're doing some AMRAP shit? Don't people get injured, especially relative noobs?
2) COST- WOW. There are two CF gyms in town and they both charge QUITE a bit more than my current gym. One option is $155/month after a 12 session on ramp that costs $300. The other has options for unlimited or three session/week membership. The 3/WK costs $125/$115/$105 per month for 3/6/12 months. I currently pay about $40/month at a pretty nice gym. Just WHAT are you getting for that much money? Don't get me wrong, I can afford it and I'm conscious of the cheap actuary cliche. I just would want to know I'm getting something for that kind of money.
3) Progression- how is progress measured with CF? With lifting it was fairly straightforward, just lift more and you are progressing. With CF is it completing workouts more quickly, putting up more weight, etc?
4) Is it enjoyable? Does it keep things interesting?
5) I sometimes like workouts as a time to put headphones in and focus on me, without having to talk/deal with other people. Does this get lost with CF since you are dealing mostly with group classes?
Any other background/info would be appreciated. Hope I wasn't too long-winded here.
