Out of depression and back to the profession?

mercredi 7 janvier 2015

Hi all,

I'm kind of going through a rough patch in life, and I'd like to hear what you guys think.

I had a problem with depression when I was in college for actuarial science, and it slowed me down a lot. I didn't do any actuarial internships (because I'm a moron), and didn't pass as many exams as I'd like. I graduated in 2013 (I had to repeat the two terms when my depression was at its worst), and I still struggled with depression until recently where it looks like I made a COMPLETE recovery.

Now, I'm not complaining because it feels great to feel normal again and to be in control of my life once again. But objectively speaking I am facing more barriers than a typical graduate: more than a year unemployed, no actuarial internships. I have 4 prelims and am going for C/4, but it feels a little bit hopeless because entry level jobs seems to be getting more and more prohibitive (especially in Canada, where I live).

I'm also considering doing something else, like software development or even going back to school for something like data science or machine learning. I just feel like I have to do something soon because being so far behind is not pleasant at all.

What do you guys think?
