Chi-square statistic question

I don't get how this part of the Chi-square statistic is derived:



"In cases where data are split into intervals, the observations in an interval, given the total no. of observations, automatically follow a Poisson distribution, regardless of the underlying distribution, ..."



Why is it automatically Poisson?
