My manager when I was an intern told me not to send these. My first manager at my full-time job encouraged me to send them.
Personally, I kind of like sending/receiving "thanks" emails. Sure, I guess they're somewhat pointless and a waste of email space, but I like receiving a thank you now and then. Also, then I know they got and read my email.
