New house wired vs. wireless

mercredi 17 septembre 2014

So we've just bought a new to us 1970's house and I need to fix up the internet connectivity. What are your thoughts about wiring the house vs. putting up a wireless relay?

Details - my wife and I both work from home, heavy internet users. Including VPN/database access, and lots of phone work - via voip.

Internet comes in at the north side of the house. It's easy to wire to my wife's office inside the house. However my new office will be in a shop located south of the house (seperate building). If I go hardwire, I've got to run a couple cables across the length of the house, through some conduit underground to the shop. It's doable, but will involve various levels of swearing on my part.

Am I gaining anything by going wired? I'm sure transfer speed will be similiar (since we've only got 10mbits on the feed anyway), but I'm concerned about lag. I'm thinking that wired is 'done right' and wireless between the house and the shop then back to wired is 'easy, but not as good'. Am I overcomplicating this? Just go wireless? Will I regret that later? Can I even get wireless that runs decently through the entire length of a house and into a metal-clad workshop?

Also, any other suggestions for my new bad-ass office are welcome. I will of course be adding either a woodstove or fireplace and probably a TV and sound system of some type.
