Not sure if I got the details right - maybe someone can clarify. My understanding:
Syria is more or less an ally of Russia.
Civil war breaks out.
We hate Assad and want to help the rebels.
We accuse Assad of using chemical weapons but don't get support for invading.
Assad defeats the rebels.
ISIS appears and makes gains in Syria.
US decides we need to bomb SYria to defeat ISIS - and help Assad?
