I just got myself a new cast iron skillet. I've never had one before. I tried following some instructions regarding seasoning it, but I don't think it came out right. So I'm seeking the advice of the AO on this.
I first cleaned the skillet really well - I was going to self-clean my oven anyway, so I put it in there when I ran the cycle.
I took some canola oil, and used a brush to thinly coat the entire skillet. I pre-heated the oven to 350. Put the skillet face-down on the upper rack, and some foil on the lower rack to catch any drips. Left it in for just over an hour.
Now it feels a bit sticky. Google told me that's no good, and it probably means I used too much oil.
So, do I need to clean everything off it now and start over? What's the best kind of oil to use? Please bear in mind that I don't want to use anything that is animal-based. What temperature should I use? Were the sites I saw that said 350 wrong?
