Summary
The Senior Health Actuary coordinates, prepares and performs highly complex actuarial analyses required to develop new products, project future results, re-price existing products, and/or determine financial strength.
Job Overview
1. Under minimal supervision, performs complex and often unique work assignments utilizing actuarial modeling software driven models for pricing, valuation, and/or risk management. Enters data and tables, runs models, and generates reports. May make adjustments and improvements to models, when appropriate.
2. Shares knowledge with team members and serves as a key resource to less experienced team members on escalated issues and navigates obstacles to deliver work product. Serves as a Subject Matter Expert in one or more key areas.
3. Manages and oversees complex projects involving cross-functional actuarial areas. Leads project team through concept, planning, execution, and implementation phases with minimal guidance.
4. Reviews and produces reporting with great attention to detail. Identifies and resolves reporting problems independently, and improves reporting processes and controls.
5. Maintains proper price level, price structure, data availability and other requirements to achieve profitability and competitive goals.
6. Identifies critical experience areas to monitor and suggest timely remedies to correct or prevent unfavorable trends. Identifies sources of gain and loss by product and assumption.
7. Tests impact of assumptions and the appropriate premiums, interest margins, reserves, and cash values for profitability and viability of new and existing products.
8. Advises management on issues and serves as a primary resource for cross functional team members on escalated issues of a unique nature.
Specific duties for this role: The focus of this role is ownership of USAA's Medicare Supplement line, including but not limited to pricing, annual filings, trend analysis, refund filings, automation of current processes, etc. The ideal candidate will have experience in either filing (experience working successfully with regulators) OR automation.
Minimum Experience
Bachelor's Degree required (or 6 years equivalent work experience in lieu of a degree may be substituted). Six years actuarial experience required (or eight years of relevant business or analytical experience may be substituted); Demonstrated leadership experience. Advanced knowledge of actuarial technique and procedures, data analysis tools, and industry data sources; Demonstrated success with project management and/or leadership; Strong computer skills (Microsoft Office Applications, statistical analysis); Intermediate knowledge of a programming language. Attainment of Society of Actuaries Fellowship (or ASA with 10 years of experience in lieu of FSA designation may be considered)
Preferred Experience
Bachelor's Degree in Actuarial Science, Statistics, Mathematics, or Economics. More than nine years of actuarial experience. Experience with Medicare Supplements and/or Health Insurance pricing.
