Or not. Sorry, that was a mistake. My bad.

Students told email with Nebraska scholarship offer an error.

Spoiler:

Madicyn Deiro’s roller-coaster week reached the high point Friday afternoon when the University of Nebraska-Lincoln informed her she was a Regents scholar.

The Lincoln Southwest High School senior, who plans to pay her own way through college, said Monday receiving one of the university’s most prestigious awards was enough to make her forget about a minor car crash earlier in the week.

“I got this email and everything seemed legit,” said Deiro, “and about 45 minutes later, I got another email saying it was a mistake.”

Deiro was one of perhaps 500 prospective UNL students who got emails saying they would be receiving the financial award worth as much as $27,000 over four years.

UNL spokesman Steve Smith said less than 500 students actually received the email, which was sent by mistake Friday afternoon.

About 11,000 prospective students were supposed to receive a notice reminding them to finish their financial aid application. A portion of them received the Regents scholarship confirmation email instead.

“We were made aware of this on Saturday, when there was a concern of a data breach,” Smith said. “We received about 25 responses from people worried this was some kind of scam.”

Smith said there was no data breach, and the wrong emails were sent because of a "clerical error."

After receiving the email with the scholarship offer, Deiro quickly phoned parents Jeff and Cheryl, who were dining out before the Florida Georgia Line concert Friday night.

“When I told my dad, he was so happy he started crying,” Deiro said.

Jeff Deiro said Monday night that Madicyn, the couple’s youngest child, works hard for everything she gets.

“Maddy has overcome a lot in her life and really puts 110 percent into everything,” he said. “I was just so happy for her, and then about 35 minutes later I received another email saying it was all a mistake.

“My wife didn’t believe me. She thought I was messing around until I showed her the email,” he added.

It read: “This email is to notify you that you may have received an email in error. Please disregard any email you may have received earlier today regarding a preliminary Regents Scholarship offer. We apologize for any confusion as a result of the earlier email.”

A Regents scholarship covers the cost of tuition at UNL, and recipients number between 450 and 500 students each semester.

Madicyn Deiro said the news that she wasn’t in fact receiving a Regents scholarship -- at least not yet -- ruined her weekend.

“I mean, how does this happen?” she asked on Monday.

Now, she is watching her email in cautious anticipation of a second notice informing her that she qualified for the highly sought-after award.

“Anything helps,” she said. “I’m enrolled at UNL, and I’m still planning on going there, but it’s kind of off-putting.”

Makes me proud to be a grad!
