Getting up-to-date, production level data

lundi 16 février 2015

Most of the time, when investigating a certain business unit, I can convince IT to give me access to quality assurance servers, typically on a MS SQL Server or an Oracle DB. However, oftentimes these servers are out of date (maybe by a year or longer), so I may not be able to acquire the most relevant information to be used in modeling.

What we would like to have are up-to-date data from our production servers, however my boss and others at his level seem to have a tough time obtaining data from IT or convincing them that we have a justified business reason for access.

Ideally I would like to establish an overnight quarterly feed that copies over production databases onto an actuarial server (another hurdle is buying an actuarial server). That way we have up-to-date copies of production data without overloading the production servers with queries.

Has anyone here faced a similar situation and what approaches have you tried to solve it?
