Life insurance actuaries: what's the most interesting part of your job?

lundi 16 février 2015

I work in P&C. It's pretty interesting, and I can't see myself ever switching.

I had an internship at a life insurance company and it was pretty uninteresting. I guess a lot of that was probably just because I was doing intern work though, and other aspects were probably very specific to my department/company. It seemed very... mortality tables, reporting work, regulatory stuff, more mortality tables, spreadsheets. Not a lot of innovation happening.

I'm wondering what interesting things life insurance/annuity actuaries are doing on a day to day basis, just out of curiosity. What are the most interesting projects that you work on? What is your day to day work like? Is it really that much more interesting than, say, pensions? Annuities seem pretty similar to pensions, although the industry isn't shrinking in the same way.
