As I might have mentioned before, my son just enlisted in the Navy. He's currently at boot camp at Great Mistakes, and he's scheduled to graduate in May. He was helping out with the rent before he left, so my expenses have gone up, plus I need to be saving up for a deposit for a new place I'm going to have to find this summer when my other roommate moves out. So making the trek to Illinois to see his PIR would be a pretty serious financial hit.
For those who have been in the military, how big of a deal is a PIR? How close is it to, say, a college graduation in terms of importance? If I don't make it, will he even be disappointed at all? I'm planning to visit him this summer at the next stop in his training, because at that point I'll have enough time that I can drive there.
I'm pretty sure his mother is going to be there, so he will have someone, if that makes a difference.

How important is attending my son's PIR?
