Fed Up

So there is a worthwhile documentary out there ("Fed Up") that alerted me to how much sugar there is in food and what it does to you. Maybe I've just been ignorant all these years, but I started looking at labels. I've never really worried about sugar before, maybe that's why I'm a moderate fattie.

A 3 Musketeers bar has 27g of sugar, and a teaspoon of sugar is 4g.

By comparison, the Special K Fruit & Yogurt cereal I was downing was 10g/serving x 4 servings = 40g. Plus at least one cup of milk is another 10g, so 50g in total! No better way to start the day than with two candy bars' worth of sugar!

That would be 6:30-7:00 am and I would usually be hungry and into my lunch by 10:30am.

My son prefers regular Cheerios (1g/serving). I also had Multi-grain Cheerios stocked, and realized that was 6g/serving. I was so disgusted at this that I filled the half-empty box with regular Cheerios to dilute it.

Flavored Yogurt? 15g - that might need to go too.

So instead I started eating a bagel and half with a thin layer of cream cheese (Total: 5-6g) and maybe a banana (14g). Suddenly I didn't need my lunch until 11:30 or later. My appetite decreased and I'm already down a pound or three in less than a week.

Some sugar must be OK, but what kind and how much?

According to the documentary the food companies worked to make sure no sugar daily value appears on the labels. I suppose from their point of view they would make more money if we were food addicts and sugar slaves. I turn 43 next week, I guess changes are better late than never...
