Back to School?

mercredi 19 novembre 2014

Hi everyone. I'm contemplating a career change from public education to actuarial work, and am wondering whether I should go back to college and/or what courses I would need to take.

To give some context: I'm 29 years old, with several years of teaching experience under my belt, and I have a bachelor's in Math from a major American university. (Also a master's in Education, though I suspect that won't be too relevant.) I have plenty of Calculus/Discrete Math/Analysis classes under my belt, as well as two Stats classes. I don't have much of a computer background, so some programming courses may be needed.

I've heard from multiple sources that I should start by passing the first two preliminary exams, so I'm currently studying for those. However, I'm unsure what comes next. Do I need to go back to school to improve my background? If so, any advice on the sort of courses an employer would want to see? I'm also wondering about my next step afterwards: Is a career-changer like myself expected to get an internship, or do I look for a regular entry-level position?

Thanks for reading. I'm feeling a little lost, so any guidance is much appreciated.
