How bad does it look to have no clubs/extracurriculars?

vendredi 21 novembre 2014

As a college student looking for internships, I feel that I never have a good answer during phone interviews when asked what my extracurriculars are. I feel like they are expecting everyone to be an officer of the actuary club, volunteer at a soup kitchen every weekend, organize a habitat for humanity, be on a sports team, etc. Maybe I just want to do my college work while learning some software skills on my own, go on hikes, and play my guitar. Is that really so bad? Its like sorry I'm not in any clubs and I don't do any volunteer work, but I am studying extra things on my own. And how am I supposed to show "leadership"? Am I wrong for thinking that it will be enough to just get good grades, pass exams, and learn some programming?
