Senior wanting to try out the actuarial career

mercredi 19 novembre 2014

I am currently a senior majoring in Applied Math with minor in Computer Science. I am in the process of applying grad school for Financial Engineering. Aside from applying to quant finance internships, I am considering trying out the actuarial field. And to be honest, I am still not very certain about what I want to do. And who knows? I may fall in love with being an actuary with the much less stressful work environment compared to quant finance.

The good news is that my math foundation is pretty solid. I taught myself the first two exams and passed FM in August and recently P this month. My other advantage is that I am pretty familiar with MATLAB and Java (and a bit C++) due to my CS minor background.

But my concern is that whether insurance companies recruit seniors for internship instead of full time employment in the summer? How hard is it to find one in my situation? And should I emphasize my programming skills (such as a project to make a game similar to Tetris) in my resume? Or do they consider that irrelevant to the position? Any other advice is welcome and will be greatly appreciated! :)
