Colts Neck, NJ is a mostly white, upper middle class community. The big takeaway for me is that the widening income gap not only affects the middle class, but the upper middle class as well. Perhaps this will lead to more affordable house prices and the trend will decline.

COLTS NECK — A decline in the birth rate in the township is responsible for the shrinking enrollment in the Colts Neck K-8 School District, according to a demographic study presented to Board of Education members. As part of an ongoing conversation regarding the potential closing of the Conover Road Elementary School, board members heard future enrollment numbers from Dr. Richard Grip of Statistical Forecasting at a Nov. 19 meeting. Board members have discussed the option of closing the elementary school as a cost-saving measure as enrollment continues to decline in the district. Grip said that over the last decade, Colts Neck has seen a significant loss of residents in the 25-39 age group, which is responsible for the declining birth rate in the township. According to statistics presented at the meeting, Colts Neck recorded 173 births in 2000; by 2011, that figure had dropped to 53 births. “Do I see this a lot?” Grip said. “The answer is yes. And where do I see it? I see it in districts like yours that really do not have the economic, socioeconomic and racial diversity. The affluent districts … you see this all the time.” Grip said millennials (generally defined as people born between 1982 and the early 2000s) “probably would not come and move to Colts Neck,” which has increasing home prices and property taxes, and a median family income of $157,500. “[Millennials] might be more likely to move to an urban center, or heck, some of them are still living in their parents’ house,” Grip said. Grip’s projected K-8 enrollment for the 2019-20 school year is 785 students, compared to the district’s 2014-15 K-8 enrollment of 950 students. |
