As always, inspired by a person who wins a fair number of pair games, but fears being in the Swiss top bracket.
[color=dark blue][aside]As usual, we could ask each team to self-handicap, as with pairs events. Your handicap score is compared to the scratch scores. If you place (or win) you get points, but they're attenuated by the amount of your self-handicap. But that's not what this post is about.[/aside][/color]
Every team shows up and pays the entry¹. The teams look at each other, and decide, in secret, if they want to play in the open game. This decision is forwarded to the directing staff. If nobody is willing to play, then the TD sends everyone home and the tournament closes. No refunds. :razz: If exactly one team is willing to play, perhaps a team of professionals from Dover². then they pay the entry, collect the top prize, and... well, something. Probably they fill in as a substitute team for a down-stream odd-team bracket. This part is admittedly sketchy.
If two or more teams (N) agree to play in the top bracket, then good things happen. First, each team in the top bracket is guaranteed 2Nth place in the overalls or better, even if it wouldn't otherwise earn it. That place is only paid once.
