Electoral College streaks

jeudi 22 janvier 2015

Bored while waiting for stuff to run, so I thought this was interesting. I'm pretty sure this is accurate, but I put it together myself so my apologies if there's an error.

Active streaks:

Voting for the winner: Ohio (since 1964; 13 elections)

Voting for the Republican: 8-way tie* - Alaska, Idaho, Kansas, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Utah, Wyoming (since 1968; 12 elections)

Voting for the Democrat: **District of Columbia (since 1964; 13 elections)

All time streaks:

Voting for the winner: New Mexico (1912 - 1972; 16 elections)

Voting for the Republican: Vermont (1856 - 1960; 27 elections)

Voting for the Democrat: Georgia*** (1868 - 1960; 24 elections)

I thought about putting together a "voting for the loser", but that's not so interesting. I don't think anyone other than Minnesota & DC have even voted for the loser in 3 consecutive elections recently (Minnesota & DC both voted for the loser in 1980, 1984, and 1988). And the further back you go, the harder it is to check because I have to remember both who won, and what their party was. So I didn't bother.

*Nebraska cast all but one electoral vote for the Republican during this span, but in 2008 cast one electoral vote for Obama.

**Not counting D.C., Minnesota is the state with the longest active Democrat streak - since 1976; 10 elections.

***Georgia had seceded from the Union and thus did not vote in the 1864 election. They did vote Democrat for the three elections prior to 1864, so ignoring the hole in 1864, Georgia actually voted for the Democrat in 27 consecutive elections... and presumably would have voted Democrat in 1864 as well for 28 consecutive elections!
