How Could Al Qaeda Be So Stupid? It's Unreal

In many ways, I'm struck by the naivety of the group that alleges to have planned the attack on Charlie Hebdo, Al Qaeda in Yemen. Before this attack, Charlie was a struggling magazine that was near bankruptcy, had a salacious reputation, and was barely known outside of France (and probably within France as well). Now, their most recent issue has printed millions of copies in multiple languages, is completely sold out, and has a world wide readership. So what did Al Qaeda really think was going to happen if they attacked this newspaper?

To my knowledge, Al Qaeda is a large organization led by western educated men and likely financed by other savvy individuals. The ground troops are certainly useful idiots in their eyes. But considering this wasn't a lone wolf attack and was planned in advance, I am absolutely baffled at what the actual goals of this attack were. They must have known they would turn these men into martyrs and generate international sympathy for Charlie Hebdo. It's unfathomable to me that their supposedly educated leaders couldn't have foreseen this.

That's why this whole episode feels unreal to me. The way that this attack spectacularly backfired was completely predictable, and because of that something feels off.
