How long to stay in current job before poor employment history doesn't matter anymore

mercredi 21 janvier 2015

Hello,

I currently work for a small health insurance company. I have been in the same position for 1 and 2/3 of a year (it is over 2 years -- though not continuous -- if you count the time that I temped in the same position for half a year).

I formerly wanted to be an actuary. I passed all the preliminary exams, but could not find a job. I have a poor employment history and also have just worked a series of shit jobs. The current job that I have is the first "real" job that I have ever had, but it is somewhat demoralizing. The position does not require a college degree, and several of my co-workers (including my boss) only graduated from high school. It is basically a heavy data-entry type job where we have specific time deadlines each day that certain data has to be entered by.

The company is not an actuarial-employment warehouse. There are only 6 actuaries with letters here, and actually, only 4 of them serve in the actuarial department. On top of that, there is only one other person who functions in an actuarial role, an actuarial analyst.

When I handed in my badge before I left my current position the first time (when I was a temp), my boss (who is also my current boss) said that if I needed help getting into actuarial, she would help me out. But the only positions I have ever seen opened in the actuarial department here are for people who already have letters. And from what I can tell, there is no sort of actuarial study program at all.

I want to get out. I want an actuarial position. But one of the big issues before when I attempted to apply for actuarial jobs was my poor employment history. I can continue to stay at this job, but I am not sure if I can handle the menial work much longer...
