Statins Side Effects

jeudi 8 janvier 2015

Hello all,

In early 2014, at the recommendation of my physician, I started taking atorvastatin (Lipitor) to address high cholesterol (background: 47 5'8" 155 lb, ex-smoker clean over 2 years, blood pressure normal, blood sugar normal, exercise regularly, South Beach-ish diet, but drink more alcohol than is probably healthy). It took some time to recognize, but over a period of months I realized that the atorvastatin was 1. making me dumb as a box of rocks i.e. diminishing my ability to be productive at work and otherwise be mentally alert, and 2. causing muscle aches/soreness/tiredness such that I didn't go to the gym to lift for a month straight. To be fair, I would not characterize the latter as muscle pain, only muscle soreness. Both the cognitive decline and muscle/nerve issues went away within weeks of stopping the statin. I was on the statin about 5 months before stopping.

Most of the "official" research out there is funded by Big Pharma, so I am naturally am wary about published results. There is a small amount of research out there warning of potential dangers, but I have no way of objectively assessing this research. There was even an AO poster, Stan, who brought this topic repeatedly on the AO (but I think his semi-preachy approach harmed the message he was trying to get across).

So, I would like to get a sample size from the AO, which hopefully will be a little bit more objective albeit smaller sample size.

It will be my 1st time trying to make a poll, so if I screw it up real bad, please be kind!!

Cheers,

michiganman
