Exam/Experience Balance

jeudi 12 février 2015

My manager encouraged me to slow down on exams today. That was weird.

Hopefully by the end of the week, I will have passed all my prelim exams. I asked for permission to get reimbursed for enrolling in the FAP modules today and my manager reluctantly agreed. He later told me that he thinks I'm passing exams too quickly compared to my experience. I have about 2 months of experience not counting internships.

I thought I would be showing initiative by trying to pass all my exams as quickly as possible. I've also heard from many actuaries that passing exams as quickly as possible is critical, because life will eventually get in the way.

Has anyone else had an experience like this? Should I slow down a bit, or keep my nose the the grindstone? If I put in more time at work and showed that I am committed to work as well as exams, would that help my situation?

Also from his reaction, it seems like he might have some kind of vested interest in not giving me exam raises. Might this be possible?

Thanks!
