Is it ever a good idea to include a career summary/profile on your resume?

I absolutely hate these, but the internet seems to recommend them, as do professional resume/career advice services.

My thought is that they are a waste of space. Your resume is a summary of your career, why do you need a summary of the summary? If you have so much stuff on your resume that it needs a summary, shouldn't you cut some stuff out of your resume?

I know a few people who are unemployed who asked me to give them some resume advice. They've had their resumes professionally done and gotten advice from career centers. Both these people have really long career summaries on the top of their resumes and their experience starts after half a page. I offered my thoughts (kill the career summary or at least cut it down/get rid of the BS buzz-words), but they trust the career center people more than me, and just about everything on the internet says to include this.

Am I crazy? Do people actually value these when reading resumes? Do people actually read them at all? Would you recommend including a career summary/profile to anyone ever in any industry/at any level of experience?
