Hi. I am a senior math major at a top 30 university in the US.
I have a low gpa (~2.5), have 2 exams passed, little background in stats, my computer skills are only basic R and intermediate Excel (vlookup, pivot, etc).
I have gotten several phone interview and two in-person interviews, but none has gone very well. I've looked into other jobs, such as financial analysis, but nothing is turning up. Here are my questions:
1. The only thing I can think of doing to improve my profile is taking one more exam and learning a lot of programming. SAS, Stat, SQL, etc. Are there anything else that I should be doing?
2. I can't be unemployed while I look for a job, which can be a while. I do have a job offer from an auto parts importer. The pay is actually on par with entry level actuarial jobs, and I'll be working in a professional setting. My parents are worried that this detracts from an actuarial career. Which is true. I'm not doing something actuarial. But right now the only alternative is finding a menial job, studying for exams, and doing programming. Should I take up a job even if it doesn't seem to contribute directly to a future career as an actuary?
