Thread to track how/when the Rand Paul train derails

samedi 11 avril 2015

This deserves its own thread now since the Paul attacks are ramping up and will reach fever pitch soon. Just today, we have details of his speech to end his campaign kickoff:

* He's promising to end NSA surveillance. ;-)

* He's got some decent rhetoric: "defeat the Washington machine, unleash the American dream."

* His platform seems appealing to a broad base: "ending cronyism, reforming the criminal justice system, and defeating radical Islam."

This is all very scary for The Establishment, hence the rhetoric and antagonism which will be used against him. Expect to hear his name prefaced with things like "libertarian senator" or to have the word "isolationist" thrown around... subtly bad-sounding words, scary stuff which people don't understand.

Also expect the media to jab him consistently in interviews, trying to get a rise, and to use his explanations against him. Already we've had incidents of asking loaded questions or his explanations being interrupted and him getting irritated.

There was the incident with Savannah Guthrie where she prefaces a question with a list of oversimplified soundbites about his foreign policy positions, even throwing around the term "unorthodox" to refer to them. I'm sure she'll obediently lob softballs to Hillary, though, when/if that happens.

There was also the incident with Kelley Evans where she seemed intent on missing the point of the corporate tax holiday and cuts him off during his explanation. (We need soundbites, Rand, not genuine explanations of complex issues)

In the end, Paul will likely keep getting irritated enough until he does something he can be Howard Dean'd over. If not, probably his ever-so-wacky foreign policy stances will be used to discredit him.

If none of those work and he somehow gains enough popularity, he still has an uphill battle. Maybe the nationwide statistical irregularities in primary election voting will get him. (oh, you didn't know about that?) Maybe it will be the electoral college. Who knows! It's all so unknown. It will be exciting to see how it plays out.

Spoiler:

Paper noting the irregularities and a link to a follow-up article about another statistician who reproduced the results:
