An independent report ("the Jay report", by Professor Alexis Jay) concluded that well over 1,400 children (mainly non Muslim girls, but a few boys and a few Muslim girls) were horrifically abused over a 16 year period (1998-2014) in Rotherham, UK. Some of the girls were of primary school age, although most seem to have been 12-14.
The abuse falls under what is now called Child Sexual Exploitation, under which victims were typically initially groomed, before then being raped and then trafficked by being forced to submit to rape by multiple men, often with added physical abuse/torture (including being burnt with cigarettes, having objects inserted into orifices, being doused with petrol and threatened with being set alight, and subjected to "games" of Russian roulette).
In some cases, victims were filmed while they were being abused and tortured. They were told that if they failed to comply with the wishes of their abusers, some or all of the following would happen:
- copies of the films of their abuse would be sent to families and others
- their mothers would be raped
- their siblings would be violently attacked
- their homes would be firebombed.
The Jay report found that the vast majority of the abusers were men of Pakistani heritage.
Several victims have stated that they were frequently told that they were "worthless non Muslim white trash/whores".
So the question I wish to explore in this thread is: in cases like Rotherham (and there are several others, both in the recent past, eg Telford, Oxford, Derby, but also apparently currently under investigation in Manchester and elsewhere) does Islam play no role, with the abuse instead being due mainly to other factors, eg culture, a preponderance of Muslims working in the "night time economy of taxi drivers / fast food shops etc" hence giving increased exposure to /availability of vulnerable children?

Did Islam play any significant role in UK's child rape gang cases eg Rotherham?
