The recent explosion of the rocket after it launched a few weeks back had me wondering. They claim that there was a problem with the launch so they initiated the self destruct sequence over the launch site so that it would not crash into a populated area. This begs the question would they self-destruct a malfunctioning rocket that was carrying astronauts so that it wouldn't crash into a town or something? Would they just hit the self-destruct button and kill the astronauts if it was gonna crash anyway? Has this happened before?
