Like many of us older folks who used to play in B-flight limited events eons ago and decided to skip those and 'play-up' as we approached the upper B-limit, we observe with wonder the new style of stratified events with separate richer rewards for B-winners and C-winners.
For many years it has been considered an embarassment to play in a limited game (except for say a 0-5000 or 0-10000 nationals).---you are supposed to "play-up" to improve your game.
So a buddy of mine and I, both with 2900+ Pts. enter an open regional event at the prestigious Rye Town Winter Regional in NY. Morning session is somewhat half-ass, with several mistakes and a few lucky boards, and I am surprised to see a 56.5% posting in this field (average MPs of 3200).
In the evening session I have a blackout, thinking they were in hearts instead of NT, and boot a trick, but fortunately we were getting a near bottom anyway for NT, so not that costly. I also make another mistake and partner makes a couple, and it doesn't seem that we are getting any lucky boards. WRONG, we are 57% going into last round. Well you know what that means, a 56+57 may get us a 15th overall or so.
When my partner checks the final scores, he says: "This is really embarrassing, everyone is going to know we just won the B-flight division." and 7th overall. I guess that's an Oxymoron---A pleasant embarrassment.
