Fair division?

Ran into a question at work but not quite sure where is the best place to post this.

Suppose there are X number of accounts each with different account value, and their total is Y.

A certain amount of money Z needs to be divided between the X accounts based on the ratio of their (current account value / Y).

Trying to do this via Z * (current account value / Y) doesn't always work after rounding out the fractional cents, where adding back the credited amounts can result in a sum that's as big as 20 cents off from Z.

Another way to calculate this by find an adjustment ratio where [(Z + ratio) / (Y)]*account value would minimize that difference to less than 5 cents or even 1 cents.

My question is are there any texts or website that detail what are the best methods of finding that adjustment ratio? My math education ended at calc3 so I'm completely unfamiliar with the concept behind this calculation, but by the look of it, it has to be a fairly common upper level math question.

Currently I'm simply trying to use a mixture of goalseek in Excel and random plug and chug guesses but I imagine there should be a more efficient solution.

Thanks.
