Rotation programs are great for actuarial students, because it gives them an opportunity to be exposed to different actuarial disciplines (valuation, pricing, risk management) and product types (life insurance, fixed products, VA's). I think this is great for students because later on in their careers, it's easier to move laterally at more senior levels. For example, if you are the head of life insurance valuation but had a few rotations that touched variable annuities and pricing earlier in your career, you may be able to switch jobs to head of VA pricing quite easily.
But what does one do if they keep a single focus for their early career (say valuation only) before they are in a senior leadership position? If you're head of life insurance valuation after 10-15 years but have only worked in that department, is there any hope to move to a different functional area or product line?
I'm running into this problem now as I'd like to switch functional areas, but I'm not at a low enough level where I'm allowed to know "nothing" about the new department.... Feels like the proverbial "pigeon hole"...
