No poll, but how do you feel about work emails that start with "hey"? (like Hey Lllj, as the salutation)
I prefer emails that start with "hey" because they seem more personal/like an actual conversation. I would rarely say "hi" to someone in person or on the phone; it sounds really unnatural. I'd almost always say "hey." (Example: "Hey Mark, how are you today?" Used exactly the same as how "hi" would be used and with exactly the same tone. Not like "Hey! What are you doing?!") In an email, "hi" seems more impersonal to me than "hey."
However, because I realize that this could be seen as unprofessional in an email, I limit my "hey" emails to people who email me saying "hey" first, which I figure is a good strategy to avoid offending anyone. I find that this is typically everyone under the age of say, 35, even if I don't know them too well, while the people who I do know well who are over 35 seem to exclusively use "hi" or nothing (just a name).
Are "hey" emails common where you work or unheard of? Do you avoid it altogether, or if not, how do you determine when it's appropriate? Does it seem to be purely an age thing, or a role/seniority thing?
